A 2000 vintage of the Cuvée Alexandre Merlot from Chile was put up against the legendary Chateau Petrus 1997 - the most expensive merlot in the world - in a blind tasting competition of wine connoisseurs. They preferred the Lapostolle.
This New World "super plonk" has been raved about ever since, and for good reason. There is no need to spend £575 on a bottle of Petrus when the Cuvée Alexandre affords a supreme merlot experience, providing flavours of "coffee, roasted berries, elongated, elegant tannins, richly textured finishing, complexity and a profoundly delicious memory when the bottle is empty" (Malcom Gluck, The Guardian 22/11/2003).
This is a must-have for any serious wine consumer. Also available from Casa Lapostolle are a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Chardonnay and a Sauvignon Blanc. The Cuvée Alexandre range are Lapostolle's premium wines, and they also offer a standard range of wines which still offer very good value for money, but the Cuvée range is where all the quality is to be found.
The Alexandre Merlot can be purchased for around £15 at all good wine merchants.
